Ralph Vaughan Williams composed this Passacaglia, apparently unpublished hitherto, for the wedding on 9 September 1933 of Miss Barbara Lawrence to Alfred Gordon Clark (see M. Kennedy, A Catalogue of the Works of Ralph Vaughan Williams, 2nd edition (OUP, 1996), p.142). The bridegroom was later Judge Gordon Clark; his pseudonym as a novelist was Cyril Hare.

A hitherto-neglected piece by RVW, skilfully edited by Hugh Benham. A useful addition to the organist’s repertoire. This edition may be the first that has been published. A useful addition to the organist’s repertoire.
