Foundation

Under distinguished patronage the Guild was founded in 1888 as the Church Choir Guild. It was incorporated as a charitable company in 1905 to become known as the Incorporated Guild of Church Musicians. In 1987 the name of the charitable company was changed to The Guild of Church Musicians. The company is registered in England, No 83329.

The foundation patrons were Archbishop Frederick Temple and Sir George Elvey, organist of St George’s Chapel, Windsor.

Objects

The Guild is a fellowship of those who desire to offer the best in music to the service of the church, both amateur and professional musicians being unified in a common ideal.

Membership

Membership is open to all members of the Christian Church. The annual subscription is £20, payable in January. New members elected on or after 1st of October are deemed to have paid their subscription for the following year.

If you wish to join The Guild please download a membership application form and send it with your remittance to the Membership Secretary.

The Guild is a registered charity. Members who are UK taxpayers can increase the value of their subscription by completing a Gift Aid declaration. Once completed the form should be sent to the treasurer.

Examinations

The Guild administers examinations in church music at various levels from the Preliminary Certificate through to the Fellowship of the Guild. For details see the examinations page.

Publications

The Guild’s magazine ‘Laudate’ is published three times a year.
