The Use of Instruments in Worship – A Practical Workshop – Postponed
Postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic – please check back for a future date
Staffordshire Workshop for local Church is a first
Musicians in Staffordshire are tuning up for a practical workshop to encourage wider use of a variety of instruments in churches.
The event at St Edward’s Parish Church in Leek on Saturday, June 13 is the first of its type to be organised by the Guild of Church Musicians (GCM) which encourages musicians of all denominations within the church to attain the highest standards of music in worship.
Josephine Smith, a music teacher and church musician who is one of the event organisers, believes that an event of this type arranged for players of instruments other that the organ is a ‘first’ for the guild.
Working with Josephine will be Roger Wilkes, a member of the GCM council and secretary of its Academic Board.
He said: ‘In addition to beginners, instrumentalists of all ages and all levels of playing ability will be welcome at our informal hands-on event.’
During the day the musicians will rehearse hymns in a variety of styles as well as early music.
The arrangement of hymns and copyright issues are among other topics which will be covered.
The day will conclude with a short and informal act of worship which will provide an opportunity for the instrumentalists to demonstrate some of the new skills and techniques they have acquired during the day.
To participate in the workshop it will be essential to book in advance. The fee to take part is £25 (£10 for students).
